Skin
Skin is the largest and one of the most complex organs of the human body. Its main function is to protect the body. Skin is the sensor through which we feel heat, cold, pain, pressure, texture and other surface sensations. It shields the inner organs and delicate tissues against potentially damaging sunlight, bacteria, and air pollutants. Skin often reflects the state of our health and emotions.
The Skin's Structure: Skin varies in thickness and texture on different parts of the body, depending on its specific function. Skin is composed of two main layers, the Epidermis and the Dermis.
Epidermis: The surface, or top layer of the skin. The Epidermis reflects the condition of the skin and its degree of dryness and oiliness.
Dermis: Just below the Epidermis, the Dermis provides nourishment for the Epidermis and contains cells which produce protein tissues. These tissues give strength and elasticity to the skin. The Dermis contains blood vessels, nerves, sebaceous and sweat glands, hair follicles and lymph vessels. If the Dermis is damaged, permanent scarring can result.
Sebaceous Glands: They are found in the Dermis and help determine skin type. They secrete sebum, the substance which keeps skin soft and supple. Over active sebaceous glands cause oily skin. When these glands are under active, the skin is dry. Common skin disturbances such as acne often result when the sebaceous glands produce too much sebum. Bacteria can then cause inflammation, resulting in blemishes.
Subcutaneous Tissue: Also known as hypodermis, is a soft and protective under layer which cushions the Dermis and supports the skin. This tissue is practically non existent around the eyes, which is why this area is so delicate.
The Aging Process
Everyone wants to look as young as possible, for as long as possible. That's the primary reason people care for their skin. Most people base their assumption of age on how their skin looks. This isn't an accurate measure, because heredity, health, diet, exercise and consistent skin care all play an important role in the way your skin looks.
Changes that occur in skin as it ages:
* Loss of tone in the muscles underlying the skin
* Slowing down of circulation
* Reduction in sebum production
* Gradual reduction in the natural ability of skin to quickly replace the vital moisture skin loses every day
Once the intercellular network starts to dehydrate and harden, wrinkly begins. The best help for aging skin is to begin protecting, and moisturizing, as early as possible.
Why does skin change as we grow older? Your skin is constantly renewing itself. New cells form within the layers of the skin and make their way to the surface to replace dead cells. Young skin owes its radiant, healthy look to its ability to bring new cells to the surface rapidly.
As we grow older, our skin's renewal process slows down. Cells are replaced at a slower rate. In the aging Dermis, changes in the protein tissues cause a weakening of the skin's support structure. Sensitivities, Problems & Reactions
Skin Problems, Irritants, Sensitivities and Allergies
The skin's condition is affected by a multitude of factors. They include poor health, sluggish circulation, lack of exercise, insufficient sleep, tension, stress, smoking, inadequate nutrition, pollution, hormonal changes (including pregnancy and menopause), lifestyle, medication, exposure to chemicals and sun.
While some of these factors are beyond our control, proper skin care can go a long way toward containing and controlling the reactions of our skin.
Jafra Skin Care products are extensively tested and formulated to assure that they do not cause reactions among most people. When a reaction does occur, it is generally attributed to something in the individual user's skin composition rather than the fault of the product. Just as with food allergies, negative reactions to skin care products and ingredients are not universal.
What to do about reactions: If you think that your skin has reacted to a Jafra product, you should discontinue usage of all products. Then, in order to determine which (if any) product was the cause, you should begin to slowly phase in the various products, one at a time.
For example, begin using your Cleanser for a week. If no reaction occurs, add the Skin Freshener the following week, then Moisturizer the next week, and so on until the responsible product is identified, if in fact it is the Jafra.
You may find that no product is to blame, but that something else, such as food eaten at the same time usage began, exceptional stress, etc., caused the reaction.
